So many afternoons spent in Lahaina, especially for Dad pau hana at the Pioneer Inn, now in ashes. These photos go back to 1982, when we were living at the Mauian, all the way up to 2022, my most recent visit there with my mom, after we’d lost both my grandparents and my dad. It was just us for the first time. We walked Front Street like we’ve always done, stopped for a drink at Kimo’s. Watched the sunset from the wall. The people of Hawaii are suffering so much due to this tragedy. Lahaina town is steeped in history, a place of monumental cultural significance. The loss of it, the loss of life, of houses and pets and businesses and tangible memories.. It’s too much to bear. What can you do to help? Give them time to make sense of this, to recover what they can. Honour Lahaina’s significance and culture. It was always so much more than a tourist destination. And give what you can.
