This year, Iceland made a brave decision on June 2th to suspend whaling for the summer, based on animal welfare concerns. Whales were hunted with explosive harpoons, some suffering up to two hours before dying. Two thirds were female and a number were pregnant. The Icelandic government is now deciding whether they can extend the ban into September for the rest of the hunting season. I want to encourage Iceland to maintain the ban on whaling, and to end whaling for good. And I support the Icelandic people who are fighting for healthy oceans and for the whales.
