I watched as she tried so hard to have a good time because she knew how excited I was for us to be there. For us to have an only Mama and Charlie date. To sing and dance to the songs we listen to in the car. I knew something was off. In the middle of the show, she asked if we could take a break. We went outside, I read her energy and asked if she would prefer it if we left. She started crying and told me that the concert was a good choice, that she loved it, that I was such a good mom and she knew how hard I worked to get her ready and how I kept a fun surprise for her but that she thought maybe it was best if we left. She was trying to take care of ME. I looked at her and I told her that I was so proud of HER for making a good choice for HERSELF. She told me what she needed, she was clear about it and just like that, we left. I felt terrible for not thinking that it might not be an ideal date with so many people that would cause anxiety to rise for her. She felt terrible that she may have let me down. We both learned valuable lessons last Sunday. I got to know my girl a little more and Charlie was able to speak up for herself. I’m proud of us. Parenting is hard, things aren’t always the way they may look in a photo. Be gentle and easy on each other, we are all just trying to navigate this life. In the end, the best part about the whole date was getting ready by ourselves without the show and the hoopla. You don’t actually need to “go big”, what really matters is connection. That’s what the kids will remember anyway. I’ll tell you what though, @kidzbop … you put on a great show. 🌟 Side note: if any of you are parents of or a human who has ADHD and/or ASD and want to share your stories or give me any advice on what may have been a success for you, I’m all ears.
