On this date in 1986, “Higher Love” went to #1 in America.

Steve speaking about co-writer Will Jennings: “He’d gotten to know me by then, and he knew the kind of spiritual, positive idea that we were trying to get across. And I think he was fully aware of that. By this time, we had talked about that— and of course we touched on it with ‘While You See A Chance’. And it was a kind of continuation, I think, of the same idea of ‘While You See A Chance.’”

Engineer Tom Lord-Alge: “I remember the day Chaka Khan came in to sing her part. She came in the studio, sat down behind the glass in front of a microphone, and we had a stool set up there. I started the tape, put the machine into record, and she lit a cigarette. Russ Titleman and Steve and I are kind of looking at each other, and wondering what she was doing. And when it got to the chorus where she was to do her thing, out came this most glorious sound, and all the smoke that was in her mouth. And we all just cracked up laughing, but she just delivered the most amazing vocal performance.”

“The trademark of ‘Higher Love’ is the drum introduction. That drum introduction was actually originally performed by John Robinson at the end of the song, and when John knew he was well past the finish, he started playing this really cool rhythm with the rims of his drum set, and played that for 16 or 18 bars at the end of the song. None of us really thought twice about it until we were in the control room and Russ said, ‘the song is done, there’s only thing missing. We need to do something with the intro that will get the listener from the first beat.’ And I remembered this wonderful drum thing at the end, and just flew it up to the intro of the song to see what it would sound like over the intro. And everybody loved it. And from that moment on, we knew that we had something really special. Because what I really loved about it is: for the first couple of listens, I couldn’t find 'the one'. It was very difficult to count. But of course, as we got more familiar with it, we loved that about it. And that’s how that intro was created.” - Engineer Tom Lord Alge
