The People’s Fund of Maui is a result of following Maui’s lead. Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson met several times with members of the community, including kanaka Maoli leaders, to listen and figure out how they could help.
“We wanted to honor and respect the culture so no decision has been made, not the smallest decision or the largest decision, without conferring with the community leaders who have supported us in this effort. We said, “Is this what YOU want?” They said, “Yes, this is what we want now.” It doesn’t mean there aren’t many things to happen later. As a result of this community effort, adult homeowners or renters who lost their primary residence in the recent fires on Maui can apply to the fund to receive $1,200 per month.
