In 1972, he died in a plane crash while on a mission to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. For his contributions to baseball and his humanitarian work, Clemente was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. He is also the namesake of the Roberto Clemente Award, which is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies Clemente's commitment to community service.
