France has banned children in public schools from wearing the abaya, a loosefitting, full-length garment worn by some Muslim women. This is how I and a lot of women I know dress— some for religious reasons and others cultural. This is exactly what happens when we normalize anti-Muslim and anti-Islamic speech and discrimination— a ban that violates the human rights of women. We all deserve the freedom to wear what we want and our clothing choices should never be a decision made for us by any man or government. The French are using oppressive tactics in the name of secularism. Is this the behavior of an Olympic host?
