I’ve thought a lot about performance this year (having written a course on performance in climbing) and the same tools and strategies can also be used for public speaking. As someone who often feels a bit socially under-confident, introverted and tends to get my energy from alone time, speaking in front of big crowds isn’t my natural habitat. But I’ve used two helpful mindset shifts this year: 1️⃣ The first is to believe that everyone in the crowd is my comrade. They are my friends, well wishers and they have equal measures of good will for me as I do for them. 2️⃣ The second is that it’s not my job to control their perceptions of the talk. It’s my job to express myself as I’d like to and it’s their job to judge the talk as they please.
