Desmond Llewelyn holds the record for appearing in more Bond films than any other actor, starring as Major Boothroyd, aka Q, in 17 of the 25 films. His name was inspired by the real Geoffrey Boothroyd, a British expert on firearms who wrote to Ian Fleming to make suggestions regarding the weapons Bond uses.
