Through adversity and the passage of time, people like Joåo “Ifafe” Cajimbo (seen in image two) remain custodians of this land. Cajimbo hunted commercially in the past and used the banks of the Tempué River to exploit nature’s treasures. Over time, he became a forest guardian and a protector of nature, a testament to the power of personal transformation.  Cristina Macua (image three) impresses on her community that even as commercial hunting threatens endangered species in the region, it’s possible to work together to overcome such challenges. She shows us that healing is possible—and that sometimes we can have the strength to shape our own destinies.  Quintas Fulai, (far right in image four) uses GPS mapping to monitor the region’s forests. Equipped with this useful tool, he passes details on to the growing community of forest guardians. Fulai knows that to be truly effective, the group must decide how to blend these modern navigation techniques with their traditional skills. The hope is that these skills will one day be passed on to the next generation of guardians, who are always watching with excitement and curiosity.  And Agusto Tchimbinde (final image) chooses hope in the face of adversity. These Luchazi communities are nurturing a landscape of hope and growth, choosing to retain their heritage as guardians of the natural world.
