It wouldn’t make good sense to pick a fight with Tom Wolfe and Steinbeck but for last night at least it felt like I could go home, not sure about all the fuss they were making
At least that far off feeling of knowing home is the salty air I was born into. I was breathing it again, it had been far too long. Hearing that slower talking of locals, putting my fingers in the water, all good things
That exact home for me is a Pollocksville NC, just a little map for in between other places. It’s my grandfathers tobacco fields and sandy soil. Not all too different than Savannah, except in all the specific ways that makes a place expensive to buy a house, like amazing live oak trees full of droopy moss and neatly organized streets you want to walk
I spent most of my core adulthood life trying to avoid that salty air I grew up in…but on the second half of my life’s journey (40+ now!) I sure do miss it
Savannah wants to make poets out of us all
