Gonzalo Fonseca’s ‘Seven Marble Piece Assemblage’

After 1964, Gonzalo Fonseca devoted himself exclusively to the recovery of pre-Columbian sources in sculpture. Developed through his exploration of architectonic space in the cavities of found pieces of stone, Fonseca worked on pieces of stone found in an abandoned marble quarry in Italy.

This dialogue between the prehistoric origins of civilization and the classical and modern languages of sculpture is sustained across the geometric forms and cut-outs that constitute ‘Seven Marble Piece Assemblage.’ The assemblage evokes the ruins of a distant, prehistoric past through monolithic forms and the abstraction of primary shapes that emerge within and across its structure.

This work will be offered in our upcoming Latin American Art sale on 28 September. Christie’s is pleased to share that the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP).
