The state removed officials’ closing remarks from their YouTube recording of the 9/19 Water Commission meeting. In case you missed it, here is a portion of what Chairperson Dawn Chang shared near the end of the 12-hour meeting. For the full 21-minutes of what was said during closing remarks, visit Kanaeokana’s YouTube or kanaeokana.net/links [link in bio].
“It’s never been [the Commission on Water Resource Management’s] intention or directives to in any way blame the kalo farmers for the [Lahaina] fire.
That came out as a @civilbeat article in light of the correspondence that was going on.
The suspension of [the water code], the suspension of the [Interim In-stream Flow Standards], the threat of the West Maui Designation being withdrawn created a tremendous amount of tension, contention, fear, anxiety.
I approached @govjoshgreen and I said … “I would urge you to consider un-suspending that,” and fortunately he did.
You know, my determination to redeploy Kaleo was not a unilateral decision. That was a request I had received from the attorney general’s office based upon an investigation.
…I did not confer with the commission. I did not confer with anybody else. I recognize that something has to be done before October … when we go back to Maui. I don’t know what that decision is going to be, but I recognize something needs to be done.”
— Dawn Chang, Chairperson of the Department of Land and Natural Resources
