Creating your forever dream home (week #3)

As you grow older, it’s important to take an honest look at how your home environment is impacting your health and your life. We all age. It’s important to take the time to reflect on your living situation and discuss how your home is impacting you, your loved ones, and your clients.

In my last few posts, I talked about what to consider when fully renovating your home. Now, I’m going to discuss accessibility. To recap, go back to my last series on Aging-in-Place design that focuses on accessibility in more depth. Please see the link below:

3. Enhance Accessibility (Part #1)

Here is a checklist for enhancing accessibility in your home as you age:

· Make your entire home one floor. Even if you have a two-story home, you can add an elevator system to create a “No floor level change” so you can avoid stairs.
· Install a ramp at the entry of your home.
· Install grab bars near toilets, showers, and tubs for stability.
· Install handrails on staircases and a long wall from the bed to toilet, to assist with balance.
· Consider slip-resistant flooring material, especially in areas prone to moisture, like the bathroom.
· Remove carpet, as it is not sometimes the best option for mobility.
