When she was eight years old, Evy Mages was wrested out of bed from the house of her foster family and taken to a villa in Innsbruck, Austria. Nobody told her what kind of place the villa was, or how long she’d stay. For several months, she endured humiliation, constant surveillance, and cruel punishments. In the decades that followed, Evy avoided thinking or talking about what she experienced—but recently, she became determined to uncover what, exactly, had gone on. At the link in our bio, Margaret Talbot travels to Austria with Evy to investigate what happened in Innsbruck, and why. Photograph by @laetitiavancon for The New Yorker.
