Charting the course, pushing boundaries, and opening conversations.

African creatives today are doing all of this and more, while challenging assumptions about who Africans are and what African fashions can be.

Couturier Imane Ayissi's (@imane_ayissi) designs link Africa and its global diaspora with artisanal traditions and haute couture. His interpretation of traditional and organic materials, such as raffia and hemp, through minimalist couture design emphasizes the sophistication of African fashions and highlights an approach that considers the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Ayissi's work illustrates that African fashions are beyond definition and that creatives can and do choose their own paths.
