Mark Rothko’s ‘Untitled (Yellow, Orange, Yellow, Light Orange)’ envelops the viewer in a dramatic golden glow. Painted in 1955, it encapsulates the aesthetic, emotional and psychological complexity that is the hallmark of Rothko’s most successful canvases.

This particular painting represents a highpoint in the depiction of his dynamic fields of color. In this prolific and lauded period of his career, Rothko created twenty-two canvases, over half of which reside in museum collections. ‘Untitled (Yellow, Orange, Yellow, Light Orange)’ remained in the artist’s collection until his death in 1970, before being acquired by the legendary collectors Paul and Bunny Mellon and was in their possession for nearly 50 years. We are thrilled to be offering ‘Untitled (Yellow, Orange, Yellow, Light Orange)’ as a highlight of our 20th Century Evening sale on 9 November in New York.
