On Oct. 12, 1998, Matthew Shepard, a college student from Wyoming, died of injuries from a violent, anti-gay attack.
In 2018, 20 years after the deadly attack, Shepard’s parents donated objects representing different facets of his life to the museum. Among them are his childhood Superman cape, pictured here; a ring he bought in hopes of one day marrying; a purple ribbon he won at the Central Wyoming Fair; and stacks of condolence cards sent to his family after his death.
In the blog post in our bio, curator Katherine Ott reflects on Shepard’s life and legacy.
