Giving back and being in service is something that I know always makes my soul feel stronger, even through the most difficult times. I’m so grateful to my friends at @thisisabouthumanity for inviting me to be a witness to the incredible compassion and community our city is showing these families seeking asylum, and it was clear that more support is needed from the state and federal government to welcome everyone who comes to our city with dignity. We distributed 700 winter coats to every resident at one of the shelters for the upcoming weather. Thank you to @nycemergencymanagement @zachiscol for coordinating the visit. I was incredibly moved by Zach’s words to us about what an incredible opportunity our country has, if we’re able to meet this immigration crisis with ingenuity and compassion, as America has historically done. But, like with so many issues currently facing our country, people are being used as political pawns, and nothing is getting done except for continuing a hateful rhetoric echo chamber to justify spending money on walls that don’t work. Congress has been unable to pass meaningful immigration legislation in 3 decades, and it’s led to the crisis we’ve been seeing. I truly hope the President and all members of Congress realize what so many of us already know. People deserve dignity and respect. We have to continue to remember humanity, not just ours. But others as well. It’s the only way.
