In “Where Can We Be Found?” (أين يمكن أن تجدنا؟)—a research project and film focusing on the Lebanese Cedar tree (Cedrus libani)—artists Jumanah Abbas, Iyad Abou Gaida, and Em Joseph explore the varied ecologies that the tree inhabits and co-inhabits. Tracing how climate change and extractive tourism have impacted the tree, the film also outlines how it has been coopted as a civic emblem to support the idea of a distinct Lebanese identity. “Where Can We Be Found?” positions the Lebanese Cedar as an autonomous being, distinct from the ways in which it has been used as a national, cultural, and ecological symbol, or otherwise misconstrued.
