While Fahrelnissa Zeid’s four-decades-long career spanning Istanbul, London, Paris and Jordan is well known, less familiar is the respite of creativity and rejuvenation she found in extended summer sojourns to the island of Ischia from 1958 to the early 1970s. While there, Zeid abandoned the busy geometric surfaces of her Abstract Expressionist style for renderings of real abstract tableaux in two main styles: still sub-aquatic scapes and bursts of fireworks. Depicting fireworks meeting the sea, this work perfectly illustrates her kaleidoscopic representations of the sublime and unquantifiable awe inspired by nature. It will make its auction debut in ‘20th Century Art/Middle East’ at #SothebysLondon on 24 October as part of Islamic, South Asian & Middle Eastern Week.
