As a nocturnal marsupial, the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) spends most of its day hanging out in deep underground burrows, some of which can reach as far as 10 ft (3 m) below the surface. It’s an expert digger equipped with strong, clawed forelimbs. Females have backward-facing pouches, which prevent soil from getting inside while they dig. This critter’s enormous ears help it hear termites and other prey underground.
