It is centered around the historic - and completely unprecedented - acquisition by SF MoMA of some 160 works made by artists with disabilities who are affiliated with Oakland’s Creative Growth Art Center, San Francisco’s Creativity Explored and Richmond’s NIAD: the three Bay Area progressive art studios founded by Florence Ludin-Katz and her husband Elias Katz. ✊ Next April SF MoMA will stage an exhibition of some 110 of these works made by artists from Creative Growth to celebrate the Oakland institution’s 50th anniversary! ✊ Kudos to all the artists; to everyone at Creative Growth, Creativity Explored and NIAD; and to Christopher Bedford, Katy Siegel and the entire team at SF MoMA! ✊ It’s 2023. The fact that is has taken almost fifty years for a museum of modern and contemporary art to make such an acquisition underscores just how much work there is still to be done. EVERY Museum of modern and contemporary art should be actively researching, supporting, collecting and presenting the work of artists with disabilities. There are no excuses. If your local museum isn’t doing this, then they aren’t doing their job. Send a note to the museum’s director and curatorial staff to ask them why they aren’t supporting the work of artists with disabilities!
