#OTD in 1942, Sgt. John Basilone’s actions in the Solomon Islands would forever establish him as a hero and example for all Marines.

On Oct. 24th and 25th, Sgt. Basilone’s two heavy machine gun sections from Dog Company 1/7 were under intense enemy fire. Throughout the battle, Sgt. Basilone rallied his Marines, aided the wounded, personally manned and repaired machine guns, and maintained command and control in an incredibly chaotic and violent environment.

Sgt. Basilone was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership and courage, which were instrumental in repelling the enemy assault and inflicting heavy casualties.

On Feb. 19, 1945, Gunnery Sgt. Basilone was killed in action leading an assault on the beaches of Iwo Jima.

Gunnery Sgt. Basilone was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. He is the only enlisted Marine to be honored with both the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
