Cahun's work was both political and personal, and often undermined traditional concepts of static gender roles. Alongside her romantic and creative partner Marcel Moore, she created a subversive body of work that is often associated with surrealism. Cahun used female pronouns, but was fluid in her gender expression. In her portraits she plays with costumes and traditional gender expectations to become a wide range of characters—dandy, doll, body builder, vampire, angel, puppet. In this photograph, Cahun could be said to be ‘wearing’ the rock as a mask or costume.
