Surf Ranch yesterday, and what a day it was.
When I was 16 I needed a last minute board for a PSAA wave pool event in Irvine, CA at Wild Rivers Waterpark. @matt_kechele shaped me a board (the last one he shaped me before I started riding for @cisurfboards and Al Merrick later that summer) but it wasn’t getting glassed and sanded in time. I picked it up on the way to the airport but the resin was still tacky so I kept the windows down in the car and threw it in the bag at the airport. When I got to CA, I sanded it by hand on Main Street in Huntington. I went on to win the event and get a @surfing_magazine cover shot on the board in the process, but small correction…it was shot by @peterbrouillet. Larry ‘Flame’ Moore later told me that they added some spray to the turn in an early form of a photoshop trickery. A couple months later I won my 4th and final US Title on this board at Sandy Beach in Hawaii.
Yesterday @chris_malloy_yarning showed up with the board at Surf Ranch after it lived with his family for 35 years. Cool full circle moment from my first wave pool experience to the latest version.
To top it off, the Surf Ranch crew gifted me a new Ski, a ton of good friends showed up to surf together, a buddy buzzed the pool in his plane to say hello, one of my best friends I haven’t seen in over a year showed up just after his 50th bday and recent marriage, and we put a pretty good house band and singer together to finish it off.
Sometimes I’ve gotta pinch myself. 🙏🏽
P.S. Maybe we should have a contest on this thing at Surf Ranch…1 right, 1 left, no practice?
