Children in this age group are still connected to their families and eager to please, but they are also beginning to explore their individuality and need for independence. This means that communication with an adolescent is a delicate balance that requires a lot of patience and persistence. The adolescent years can be difficult for many families because young people begin to develop ideas, values and beliefs that may be different to those of their parents. During adolescence, parents might experience the dreaded eye roll, a “yeah, I already know that,” a loud sigh, or even a brush off. Although adolescents may challenge a parent’s guidance and advice, be assured that your message will be heard. This is part of the normal process of moving towards independence. The best thing a parent can do when communicating with their adolescent is to simply be ready to talk when the opportunity arises and to think about engaging in open, respectful, and healthy conversations. Quit yelling at your kids before they go to bed and expect them to sleep well. Quit yelling at your kids in the morning right after they wake up, before school and expect them to have a good day. You set the tone for your children. You set the tone for your voice that they will always remember in their heads. You become their inner voice. Don’t be their inner critic. Let’s raise kids who don’t need therapy to heal from their childhoods. Speak life. Speak love. Speak bravery and kindness and hope. Speak wisdom and truth. But most of all, listen to your children.
