Presented each year at the museum’s fall gala, the award recognizes and honors the artistic achievements of an African-American artist who demonstrates great innovation, promise, and creativity. Pictured here is the artist's recent exhibition of new paintings, presented at Gagosian, 522 West 21st Street, New York, earlier this year. Gavin’s paintings are metaphorical interpretations of sites that have been shaped over time by human intervention and geological or cosmic phenomena. Composed with fluid, gestural brushstrokes in striking colors, they are at times monumental in scale.
