How can modeling & simulation help design better safety gear? In the Lad-Saf™ system, designed by @3M（スリーエム） , computer simulations were used to create a buckling piece that can help reduce the impact of a fall for workers who are in high places. Basically, instead of getting to the end of your safety cable and stopping all at once, it helps spread out the force over multiple separate impacts (even if those are one right after another!)

This general principle is the same reason why cars have an intentional “crumple zone” that is designed to spread out the force of impact over a few milliseconds, rather than taking the hit all at once.
