Emerging from a brilliant ground of cobalt blue, three fields of rich color, varying in tonality, begin to glow in Mark Rothko’s ‘Untitled’ from 1968. An exquisite example of his mastery of light, color and form, the work is characteristic of Rothko’s later years when he focused his energies on exploring the limits of painting on paper.
Rothko produced a number of paintings on paper that, in their subtly varied hues and luminosity, rank among the richest orchestrations of color in his career. Many of the greatest of these works date from the late 1960s, when, under doctor’s orders not to lift heavy canvases, Rothko turned to the lighter and more versatile medium of paper.
‘Untitled’ has been held in the distinguished collection of Pitt and Barbara Hyde for nearly 20 years and is offered to benefit the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Proceeds from the sale in the Modern Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork on 13 November will support the construction of a new home for the museum—a 122,000 square-foot landmark space on the city’s riverfront that will reopen in 2026 as the Memphis Museum of Art. #SothebysModern #MarkRothko
