To say snaring is rampant in this area would be the understatement of the century. Poaching and signs of wildlife poisoning are everywhere. It’s a scourge. I’ve never seen so many carcasses and bones in an area, mostly caught in snares rotting away in the lowveld sun. In many instances the poachers haven’t even bothered to come back and harvest the meat. It mostly goes to waste. When hungry predators are attracted to the scent, they themselves get ensnared like this unfortunate young lioness. My foundation has put funding to help @ewt_carnivores rehabilitate this extremely important 42000 ha wildlife area and eradicate the ‘free for all’ that’s occurring here. On the last night of my stay, by playing recordings of a distressed buffalo calf over a loudspeaker, we were hoping to collar a lion, to better research their movements and patterns in the area. While doing the ‘call ups’ this beautiful young lady came up, and surprise surprise, she had a snare around her neck that she’d clearly been carrying around for weeks. Without precision marksmanship and veterinary skills from @the_conservation_vet this lioness would’ve been dead in a few weeks time. She’ll now make a full recovery and judging how clean the wound was, she would’ve joined up with her pride again. My foundation is hoping to raise tons more money to go towards this worthy cause and help the hard working people on the ground , many like @pnhf_non_profit who voluntarily help to remove snares.
