García Rodero’s España Oculta (Hidden Spain) serves as an in-depth anthropological study of the unique religious rites and customs of a bygone Spain. Conceived while a homesick photography student in Italy, Rodero returned to Spain aiming to immortalize its hidden Catholic traditions, navigating to remote towns and villages in what became a 15-year-long project published in 1989.⁠

The series of black and white images exudes a theatrical quality bordering on the surreal, from macabre portraits of masked figures to depictions of mass rituals emitting a powerful hysteria. Penitent scenes of processions with large wooden crosses are contrasted with moments of joy as Rodero’s subjects rejoice and celebrate the festivities, seemingly mindful of her presence and yet blissfully unaware.⁠
