Robert Jay Lifton has spent 70 years studying both the victims and the perpetrators of horror; his books have probed the psychology of former inmates of Chinese reëducation camps, survivors of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Vietnam veterans, Nazi doctors, and cult members. “Lifton is fascinated by the range and plasticity of the human mind, its ability to contort to the demands of totalitarian control, to find justification for the unimaginable—the Holocaust, war crimes, the atomic bomb—and yet recover, and reconjure hope,” Masha Gessen writes. At the link in our bio, Gessen speaks with the author and activist about totalitarianism, nuclearism, and why he has a temperament toward hopefulness. Photograph by Jens Rötzsch / OSTKREUZ / Redux.
