I had always been the apologetic, nervous, shy and anxious person who did as they were told and put my needs last. The biggest people pleaser in the world with zero self esteem or self worth and the inability to make decisions for myself because I'd never been able to. Until that point I'd had every aspect of my life controlled from who I was allowed to be friends with to what I could wear, where I was allowed to go, how I must look and how much I was allowed to eat. The suffocating, relentless and soul-destroying criticism and control left me a shell of a person with little emotion or concept of how beautiful life could be. The very first time that I said no to an unreasonable demand felt like a firework lighting up the nights sky. The first time that I blocked a phone number I felt empowered. Deleting trolling fake accounts insulting my appearance made my heart skip a beat. Bit by bit I flourished as I removed every ounce of negativity and ill-intent from my life. Instead of hiding away I stood tall, instead of hating everything about myself I fell in love with my soul and instead of simply existing, I finally understood what it meant to be alive. I climbed a mountain, swam, ran, cycled, laughed, loved and explored every aspect of life to the fullest and here I am! I've overcome life-threatening illness, loss, heartache, abuse, discrimination, bullying and built the most beautifully rewarding and fulfilling life from the ground up as a single parent to my two beautiful children who are now 11yrs and 16yrs. Today I am free because my life is precisely what I make it.
