Happy Giving Tuesday, everyone! This year, we wanted to highlight the AMAZING work done by the @joyinchildhood “Dogs for Joy” program. Launched in 2018, the “Dogs for Joy” program places highly trained dogs that perform specialized tasks in healthcare settings and act as a critical part of a child’s treatment plan. We would like to introduce you to Tyra, one of these highly skilled pups! Tyra is a facility dog at RUSH Children’s Hospital in Chicago. As a full-time employee of the hospital team, Tyra is a critical member of the child’s care team. She is trained to aid healthcare staff with everyday tasks like showing patients how to take medication, modeling how to wear a hospital gown, keeping patients calm during a medical intervention, incentivizing patients to join her on a walk, get out of bed, and so much more! Tyra’s work is so important as research shows that animal-assisted therapy can lower stress and anxiety levels, affect blood pressure, increase patient mobility, and provide an alternative focus from pain.
