Thank God this man, in a lank old raincoat, one hand hanging off the end of a mic stand, the other hand wrapped round the neck of a whisky bottle was there to save us. The man that lit up the 80’s like a stubbed out cigarette stood, just about, on many a stage way back when. Haunted by something that dragged these words and tunes from his heart and bones onto a crowd that never could get enough of his alleyway tales of women, drinking and faraway lands. Perfect fodder for this teenage boy looking for somewhere to run and somewhere to hide. “I'm sad to say I must be on my way. So buy me beer or whiskey, 'cause I'm going far away. I'd like to think of me returning when I can. To the greatest little boozer and to Sally MacLennane” After the moshing, the drinking, the pogoing, the sweat, we’d wait for the crowd to clear out, see what was left on the floor; broken watches, coins and the odd fiver if we got lucky. Then peg it for the last train home. “Lend me 10 pounds and I’ll buy you a drink and mother wake me early in the morning” And back we came each time, to see this ramshackle genius and his horde of drunken vagabonds trouncing ‘round the stage dishing out this unbridled swill of Irish spirit. These mad, beautiful songs galloping through sticky, smoky 80’s air, far far away from gawdy shoulder pads and puffed up hair. Thank you Shane for the gut punch words and lumps in the throat. Thank you Shane for the mad, beautiful, marauding music. Thank you Shane for some of the best memories of my teenage years. “In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky I lay down on the ground And the arms and legs of other men Were scattered all around Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed Then prayed and bled some more And the only thing that I could see Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me But when we got back, labeled parts one to three There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me” RIP Shane MacGowan.
