Lady de Grey was a leading cultural figure during the Belle Epoque in London. She was a prominent member of the Marlborough House set, the social circle surrounding Edward, Prince of Wales. An enthusiastic Fabergé collector who helped open their first shop in London in 1903. A patron of the arts who was instrumental in supporting the restoration of the Royal Opera House. A close friend of Oscar Wilde, who dedicated his play, A Woman of No Importance, to her.
Painted by John Singer Sargent during the height of his career, here Lady de Grey wears a simple pearl choker and earrings, delineated with minimal brushwork and resulting in a beautifully restrained portrait. Swipe to compare the painting to a photograph.
It will make its auction debut in the Old Master and 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction at #SothebysLondon on 6 December. The Masters Week exhibitions are open to the public in our New Bond Street galleries 1-6 December—discover more at the link in bio.
