They’re from a larger body of work about the glaciers and sea ice of the Arctic region. From a wider selection the editors picked out some more abstract pictures that show features in the ice of Greenland. Image 1 shows a hole made by cryoconite (a mix of mineral and organic matter) where the darker material absorbs heat, gradually melting deeper into the ice. Image 2 shows a rift (or crack) developing in a floating tongue of a glacier as it flows out over ocean water. Image 3 shows finger shaped pieces of ice gradually freezing over a melt lake on the Greenland ice sheet.
