The United States is in the midst of a student loan crisis. $1.7 trillion is owed by students who often borrowed the money before they were able to drink or vote legally.
In 2021, the arts brought in almost $1 trillion to the economy, however, the field fails to offer the financial security of a corporate job. While students shell out nearly $60,000 a year for an arts education in the US, they are rarely remunerated.
“When you’re an artist you are fully encompassed in your work,” says @kobewagstaff, a 26-year-old, self-taught photographer who recently travelled from coast to coast to document art school graduates.
“It's still a service and providing value. I find it interesting that our culture devalues that, but still expects these individuals to pay the same amount [for schooling] as a person that's going the more traditional route.”
At the link in bio 5 American art school grads sound off the importance of democratising an arts education.
