@JonBatiste and filmmaker Matthew Heineman wanted to capture the composer’s journey to his first symphony at Carnegie Hall. But when Batiste’s wife, author @SuleikaJaouad, learned that her cancer had returned, the project took on a new form.

In ‘American Symphony,’ Batiste and Jaouad opened up their lives for nearly eight months, capturing the events that challenged and reshaped their marriage.

“The goal was to make something that would be very true to life. And life at that time happened to be Suleika having this seismic diagnosis and me having these seismic career milestones,” Batiste tells VF. “It felt like it was much bigger than us."
