Iceberg, Yoho NP, Canada. Photo by @peteressick. Each year the NG photographers gather and spend a day listening and watching to presentations of 6-7 other photographers. As would be expected all the photographers had excellent work. IGer Dave Harvey had a fun and inspiring talk. I admire his honesty and the way photography is interwoven into all aspects of his personal and professional life. Sebastian Salgado's Genesis project was a tour-de-force by a top photographer. However, the highlight for me was the presentation of Aaron Huey. His extraordinary documentary photographs on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation were sequenced to his words in a way that was both cinematic and revealing. He had the worst story to tell of broken treaties and the white man's sins, but he didn't flinch from confidently telling the hard truths. As he said, "gaining the trust of people who don't trust any outsiders" is usually a no-win and emotionally draining, but he found rewards in the experience. His sincerity was refreshing. Unlike the other photographers who were good at their business, for Huey the story was personal. It took a lot of courage for Huey to do his story on Pine Ridge, but it also took a lot of courage to deliver the presentation that Huey did on Thursday.
