Photo by @chamiltonjames An adult female leopard watches me from a tree with her stash. She had caught the baby wildebeest on a track and promptly had it stolen by hyenas. I didn't know this until driving down the track before dawn in the Serengeti - the hyenas moved away as our car passed and the leopard instantly jumped out and regained her prey, before leaping up a tree with it. February and March are boom months for predators in the southern Serengeti, northern Tanzania; as it is the time when the great migration of wildebeest follow the rains into the area, in pursuit of fresh grass. The estimated 1.4 million wildebeest then calve on the short grass plains. The bounty of calves feeds an army of hyenas, lions, leopards and cheetahs; along with scavengers such as vultures and jackals. I watched the leopard eat her prey while she waited for the hyenas to leave, then she pulled it down the tree, which was far too small for her, and vanished with it.
