Here's the deal: I do not agree that following challenges on social media that involves contorting your body in a pose that your body is not ready for yet is a good thing. I want to get away from the idea that yoga is just a pose, and to get people active in a real yoga practice. I believe that practicing yoga every day should be the most important challenge - yes! There are way too many people out there pushing their bodies too far and moving into poses without preparation, just to follow a challenge and post pictures. I do not think this is good, no. Do you? As a yoga teacher I know the importance of preparing for poses and being patient with your body. Going "oh, look at that crazy pose, I'm going to challenge myself to do it right now!" is not that. It's exactly what it sounds like - a challenge! And the fact is that without proper alignment and preparation (and for some if these poses we are talking about YEARS of practice to properly prepare, not just an hour of prep and warm up on your mat) you are not doing your body any favors but putting yourself at risk. There are definitely people doing these challenges that have body awareness and that can participate without having to think twice, and I think that's a beautiful thing. I also love the inspiration that these accounts provide (love!) but I do not stand by the "do this pose today" aspect of these challenges. There is a reason we study to become teachers and there is a reason we practice and not just pose for an asana. Doing these poses incorrectly can injure you! I stand by what I believe, and I will continue to inspire my people to practice in a healthy way, and for the right reasons. Feel free to disagree - I have no problem with some of you not agreeing with what I believe. I think this is a great opportunity to find a place of silence and reflect on our reactions. If I offended anyone I am deeply sorry, as it was never my intention. If my opinions bother you, why? Let's not fight but talk and share opinions instead. I love you all and I want you to care for your bodies. Remember... We are connected in everything we do, and we all share the same love. Namaste.
