At this time of year the Clark's Nutcrackers are busy landing on cones of the white bark pine tree, cracking them open and carrying away from 50-150 pine nuts in their sublingual pouch. A single nutcracker can cache up to 98,000 nuts in various locations per season with the average cache being around four nuts. Remarkably, they remember a vast majority of the locations and forgotten nuts may one day become a majestic tree, perpetuating their symbiotic relationship. However, because of climate warming mountain pine beetles have killed an estimated 80 percent of the white bark pine trees in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
