Charles Eames on the 1952 "Sample Lesson"at UCLA: "The subject of that particular lesson was Communication, and once we started the wheels going, we had an awful lot of people behind scenes pulling levers and what not, but no one just spoke or ad-libbed. Theoretically, this could be programmed, and as you know, there were some vignettes George did and then the vignettes that we did, including “Communications Primer” stuff, and the multi-image and the sound and then, at the end of it, the smell—because Sandro was doing the smell. We had about—I’d say we had four smells on cue, but one of the significant things afterwards was to find that once they got the idea of smells, the audience read in smells that weren’t there!
