Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, Mexico. Photo by @peteressick. Today the New York Times reported a huge decline in numbers of Monarch butterflies returning to the mountains near Mexico City as part of their annual migration. The Times stated "Last year's low of 60 million now seems great compared with fewer than three million that have shown up so far this year. Some experts fear that the spectacular migration could be near collapse." The article states pesticides and loss of native habitat from development and large-scale farming as factors in the decline. "As a result, millions of acres of native plants, especially milkweed, an important source of nectar for many species, and vital for monarch butterfly larvae, have been wiped out," according to the article. I photographed this amazing spectacle of nature in 2004, but it looks like generations to come may never get a chance to have the same experience that I did.
