Photograph by @JohnStanmeyer — Pastoralist guide their livestock back to Haramfaf Bouri village after grazing all day in the Afar region of Ethiopia. In this village are found some of the oldest bones belonging to homo sapiens dating back some 60,000 years. This photograph is part of this months National Geographic cover story, Our Greatest Journey. Background Details: Not all photographs taken while on a National Geographic assignment get to see ink on paper or pixels on an iPad. Reason is there simply is not enough space. More so, a National Geographic photo essay in both the magazine and online is all about storytelling. This photograph, of pastoralist leading their animals back home at the end of the day, made it to the final tray (yes, we still call the images presented before layout as a tray, as in slide tray) but fell to the editing floor when we began to notice too many livestock photographs in the final layout. Will be posting more outtakes from the Out of Eden project soon. Till then, you can see the final edit of this story in the December National Geographic cover story, Our Greatest Adventure, on newsstands till the end of the month. Part II of the Out of Eden project begins in one weeks time where I'll be sharing vignettes from the assignment while traveling overland through Jordan and Israel. All my best, John Stanmeyer @OutofEden @OutofEdenWalk @ThePhotoSociety @VIIPhoto #Ethiopia #goats #desert
