Today in 1879: Thomas Edison demonstrates electric incandescent light in Menlo Park, New Jersey. This is his "New Year's Eve" Lamp.
As a young man, Edison worked selling candy and newspapers on the Grand Trunk Railroad. One day, he rescued the station master's young son from an approaching freight train.
