Photo by @peteressick. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the American Wilderness Act. This was the first time in the history of the United States that a government acted on the realization that some land need to be protected from development and left alone. Up until that time, most U.S. laws were enacted to encourage development and the use of natural resources. There are a few examples from world history going back to the Babylonian and Chinese Empires where natural areas were protected, but the Wilderness Act is significant in the context of the 200 years of the Industrial Revolution that preceded it. The Wilderness Act afforded greater protection to natural areas than even the establishment of the National Parks System, which was seen as a way to preserve areas of exceptional scenic value for people's enjoyment and inspiration. In contrast , Wilderness Areas were created to protect the non-human species. This was a great leap forward in environmental thinking.
