In July of 2009 I got the pleasure to take a portrait of one of my favorite actors on the planet. I had been doing a series of portraits of luminaries and Phillip Seymour Hoffman showed up to the New York studio early having ridden his bike to the studio on the west side highway from his west village home. We sat down over a cup of coffee and chatted for a few minutes before we got to it. 30 minutes later he threw his backpack over his shoulder, was back on his bike and out the door. Rarely do I get to shoot artists who's work I love and follow. Rarely do I get to shoot people as a 'fan'. Mr. Hoffman was one of those times and I'm grateful that my friend tim was able to facilitate it. Hug the people u are with because they might not be here tomorrow. The monkey is never far off the back for some. My heart goes out to his wife and kids and his friends who loved him dearly.
